Lovecraft on Astrophysics: Yog Sothoth Found At Center of the Milky Way!!!

...the last, utter sweep which has no confines and which outreaches fantasy and mathematics alike.

From the direct statement of CNN.com:
German astronomers say they have discovered conclusive proof of a supermassive black hole at the heart of the galaxy.

...or the poetic musings of MSNBC.com:
Like ballerinas pirouetting around an invisible leader, a collection of stars orbits our galaxy's gravity sink, or black hole. New infrared images of the cosmic dance confirm that this supermassive black hole weighs as much as 4 million suns.

...only a congeries of iridescent globes, yet stupendous in its malign suggestiveness.

Yog-Sothoth knows all and sees all. To "please" this deity could bring knowledge of many things.
The study also enabled astronomers to calculate the distance of the earth from the center of the galaxy, now measured to be 27,000 light-years, and enhanced by six times the accuracy to which they were able to measure the positions of stars -- the equivalent of seeing a one euro coin from a distance of 10,000 kilometers (6,214 miles).

It seems that The Beyond One, The Gate Where the Hemispheres Meet is granting us some knowledge after all.

A boat is a hole in the water you throw money into. Apparently a black hole is the One's galactic boat. Only he/it/she/they throw stars into it. It puzzles me though that these things are so powerful I am told, not even light has a snowball's chance of escaping their irresistable draw. With no chance to see it's reflection, how the Hell do we know they are there? Yeah yeah, I know. Guys and gals much much less stupid than I am have it all figured out.

I will say knowing it is 27,000 light years away does make it easier to feel comfortable making those vacation plans.

When my wife asks me about my new latest and greatest thing to waste time on, I am blaming you and Randal. You two are like drug dealers ferchrisakes. She already caught me this morning at 3:00 AM draped over the screen reading "At the Mountains of Madness". Damn bad influence, that's what you two are. Lizesses to you.

And don't forget the fact about the discovery of water molecules on an extrasolar planet. The minions of the Blind Idiot God are well on their way.

Madness is a wonderful tale though if I had to pick, like if I was about to be torn apart by whatever killed Alhazred if I lie, I'd have to choose The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Or maybe the Haunter of the Dark. Hell, I don't know.

Drug dealers have fancy hats. I need a fancy hat, but literary.

Mr Macrum - AtMoM is a great story, and I'm surprised at how much more I got from it this past month than I did 20 years ago. I know the story ain't much, but I've always had a soft spot for Dagon as well. Please don't let that drug dealer stuff leak...Uncle Sugar would can me ;-)

Randall - once those radiotelescope listening thingies in the southwest start picking up "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" we'll know the rapture is at hand!
